Just after revealing the official name of Android Marshmallow on Monday, Google has released thefinal preview version 6.0 of the software. Android 6.0 Marshmallow Developer Preview 3 is now available to download for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Android TV Nexus Player device. The bits released today are part of the final developer preview program which should be pretty close to what the general public gets on their devices when it official version is released this fall. Formally called Android M.
The final Android 6.0 SDK for the system as well as Android Marshmallow Preview 3 rolling out for developers and these are the direct links downloadable only by the developers and should be treated as such. Public version will be available this fall and to attain each of the Nexus downloads, you’ll want to head to the following links provided at the bottom of this post.
Developers will now be able to begin publishing apps on Google Play that take advantage of the new API level 23 included in the latest version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Google announced that “M” in Android M stands for Marsmallow and that the version number for the next major Android release after Lollipop will be 6.0. Brings with it native fingerprint scanner support, Android Pay, new permissions API, native support for USB Type-C, battery saving feature called doze and Now on Tap, among other things.

Notably, if you are already running a previous Android M developer preview version, you will get an OTA update for Marshmallow Developer Preview 3 over the next few days. If you can’t wait for the over-the-air update to arrive, you can do so by alkternatively download and flash the system image of Android 6.0 right now on your Nexus device.
Update notes for the final preview version of Marshmallow:
- Preview images of Android software aren’t intended for consumer use
- You’ll have to manually re-flash your device when the consumer version rolls out this fall if you want to receive OTA updates
- Android Platform Change:
- Final Permissions User Interface — we updated the permissions user interface and enhanced some of the permissions behavior.
- API Change:
- Updates to the Fingerprint API — which enables better error reporting, better fingerprint enrollment experience, plus enumeration support for greater reliability.
