There is a good news if you really happen to find yourself in need of a new battery though, with MacRumors reporting that a new Apple directive has been issued in which users may receive replacement MacBook Pros rather than new batteries. Due to what is being highlighted as a service constraint of top case assemblies with integrated batteries, Apple has described its own Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers that it is currently unable to replace the batteries of 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display models that were released in mid-2012 and early 2013.

Replacement machines are instead being offered to those who do not want to wait until the constraint is expected to ease – Apple believes this will happen by September 15th – but if consumers decide to wait, in return for that patience, Apple will cover a free for the replacement battery. Individuals who have opted for the swap-out have also reported receiving anything from a refurbished machine to a brand new 2017 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

Notably, the policy only applies to MacBook Pro with Retina display machines that too released in mid-2012 and early 2013, and while others not appear to be a by geographic restriction on this directive, not everyone appears to have gotten the message, so your mileage may well vary.

Those looking to get the battery repaired (serviced), should know that the battery condition on your Mac should actually be adverse as pointed in macOS / OS X. You can check that by clicking the Apple logo on the menu bar by clicking About This Mac > System Report…> Power. Under the “Health Information” section, if the battery condition says “Service Battery” or so, something similar, you qualify for a replacement.

Note: Rules are rules, the battery should typically have a full charge capacity below 80 percent and of course, the battery’s charge cycle count may also be a factor. Only Apple’s diagnostic test will ultimately determine if the battery requires servicing.

Apple could stop acknowledging this internal policy at any time, and also not all employees may be aware it exists. Since the process appears to differ, but there doesn’t appear to be any regional limitations to the policy, with consumers who successfully exchanged their MacBook Pro models residing in the UK, UK, CA, Brazil, Spain, Australia and other countries. It also doesn’t appears to matter if the Mac is covered by AppleCare+ to qualify.
