Apple May Introduce Its Own Version Of Google Glass [Reports]

Apple reportedly working with a German lens company Carl Zeiss that predicts are apparently in cahoots to bring a new augmented reality product to market, otherwise an alternative Google Glass to the scene, according to a notoriously accurate Apple commentator. Here’s what we know so far about it.

Said that Apple has partnered with German lens and optics manufacturer on bringing a new pair of augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, as reported be the technology blogger Robert Scodle. The infamous took to Facebook to share that he had heard from a Carl Zeiss employee that the two said companies are hard at work, with Apple hoping to have a product ready by the end of the year.

Scoble also wrote on his Facebook page that an employee from Carl Zeiss AG confirmed rumors regarding Apple and Carl Zeiss AG are working on “a light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses“. Actually, the conversation occured during the CES 2017 in Las Vegas last week. By this it specifically took place at the Zeiss stand in the AR section of CES, as per Scoble.

This is not the first time rather Apple has long been rumored to have the world of augmented reality squarely in its sights, but till then there wasn’t any concrete information surrounding any products. This new leak, suggesting the possible arrival of an Apple-branded augmented reality glasses, will add further fuel to the fire in that regard, while also providing a possible timescale for when the product will ship – supposedly by the end of 2017.

The glasses could be announced by Apple as early as this year, which was previously predicted Apple to introduce them in 2018. This is what the employee said to have spilled the beans on exactly what their company and Apple are working on. As Scoble tells us:

Exclusive news: Apple and Zeiss working together on augmented reality optics. […]

A Zeiss employee confirmed the rumors that Apple and Carl Zeiss AG are working on a light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses that may be announced this year. (I thought it was next year but now that I saw this I believe it will happen this year).

If Scoble is right and Apple is really planning to release a pair of glasses, it’s nonetheless unclear how they would be positioned versus competitor products or what they would be priced at. When compared to Google’s product, priced its failed “Glass” at over £1,000, while Snapchat is currently selling its “Spectacles” in the US for $130 (£100).

It has already been known for a while now that Apple has a dedicated team working on augmented and virtual reality and ways to incorporate both into its products. The company is also said to be looking to bring augmented reality to its autonomous car project as well, so we know well that Apple is looking beyond just a VR/AR headset for the iPhone.

Unlike Google and Snapchat, Apple is yet to release any form of computerized glasses in reality. In pursuit of such diverse feats, the help of a company such as Carl Zeiss, which know its way around a lens or two, makes plenty of sense for Apple to collaborate, well, we can’t really put a pin on exact concrete details till Apple gives us at least some hint.

What’s your answer?
