Apple’s contactless payment has come a long way since it was launched in September/October last year. Made Apple Pay, initially exclusive to customers based in the U.S., extended its support to the United Kingdom in July 2015, and after a big gap, it has landed in partnership with American Express to Australia. iPhone-based mobile payments expanding to a fourth country following Canada earlier this week. While TSB and Tesco Bank hopped onto the Apple Pay bandwagon in the UK.
Today, Apple’s NFC-based payment system has officially made its way all-around into Australia. Apple Pay is initially limited to American Express-issued cards. The service can be used at Coles, Harvey Norman, Kmart, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Woolworths and other select Australian stores. Setup is required to accept contactless payments via American Express, though availability is far less common than it has in the U.K., and we however should see local banks rolling out support for Apple Pay within a year.
Here’s how you can set it up on device currently compatible with Apple pay:
- iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus
- iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3
- Apple Watch paired with iPhone 5 or later
American Express cardholders in Australia can add credit cards in the Wallet app on iOS 9.1 by tapping the “Add Credit or Debit Card” option, “+” button in the top-right corner of a new Apple Pay section, which takes you through a painless setup involving a quick scan of your American Express card using the device’s camera followed by entering the security code along with any missing details.

Next in line would be Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong next in line to receive support for the service and Australia isn’t the last stop in Apple Pay’s current expansion.
Apple confirmed that Apple Pay support is also coming to Domino’s and Cinnabon in the U.S. by year end and 2016 respectively. Starbucks, KFC and Chili’s locations will adopt Apple Pay next year.
