It’s a Telugu character bug which causing devices to crash in minor iOS update, as has been confirmed by Apple. A fix for a recently discovered bug which as said has been affecting apps like Messages to crash on iPhone, iPad, and Mac has been included in iOS 11.3, macOS 10.13.4, watchOS 4.3, and tvOS 11.3, updates that are currently being beta tested ahead of a release this spring. Here are the details you really need to know about.
We’ve been seeing this multiple times over the years. Now, it’s been receiving a specific Telugu character on an iOS device running iOS 11.2.5 will cause the device to crash and hang, is also becoming common knowledge, more information about this particular iOS 11.2.5 bug is outed.
Previously, similar bugs of this nature, receiving a specific message or URL which would cause the Messages app on iOS or macOS to crash and hang. The device owner would need to remove the offering conversation before it could be used again. With this particular bug though, reported by Italian website Mobile World [Google Translate], receiving a specific Telugu character, or having that word displayed in an app, will cause that application to crash and hang and sometimes require a full DFU reset to rectify it.
Furthermore, Apple told that the bug will also be addressed in an upcoming iOS update that will be released in the near future, ahead of iOS 11.3, so customers won’t need to wait several weeks for a fix now. Minor updates for other operating systems will likely come at the same time.
Here’s how the bug was discovered? It seems that many are experiencing the issue are describing symptoms, whereby a specific messaging app will crash upon receiving the character, and then relaunching the app, will just make it continually crash back to the device’s Springboard over and over again with no way to easily prevent the problem.
Additionally, if that character or symbol is displayed in an incoming notification, the whole issue is exacerbated by the whole Home screen and Springboard becoming entirely unresponsive. What to do then?
Those device owners who are experiencing that similar problem is very much advised to simply wait until Springboard reboots rather than trying force a reboot as the going so will likely get the device stuck in a various reboot cycle.
More details about the bug, induced by sending a specific character in the Indian language ‘Telugu’, causes certain apps on iPhones, iPads, and Macs to freeze up and become unresponsive. Messages, Safari, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and other apps that accept text input are all affected.
In case, when a character is sent in an iMessage, for example, it can relatively free up the whole Messages app on all of a person’s Mac and iOS devices. Result? The Messages app will then refuse to function properly until the offering character is removed by deleting the conversation with the person who sent it.
In fact, in some situations, if the same character is viewed through an iOS notification, it can cause the entire device to crash, resulting in a re-spring or worse than that. It might be difficult to fix and delete the problem message for apps like WhatsApp unless you have web access enabled.
Note: Telegram and Skype appear to be unaffected by this type of bug. And also, the public beta version of iOS 11.3 is unaffected, too. It appears Apple was made aware of the problem a least three days ago and plans to address it in an iOS update soon.
Alternatively, installing the iOS 11.3 or macOS 10.13.4 betas will fix the problem, because they are still in beta state, only developers and testers will be able to. For now, it seems to be a case of waiting until Apple publicly acknowledges the bug and provide a clear path on how to rectify the problem.
Update: This bug seems to affect Apple Watch as well!
