BHIM App Spam Payment Problems, NPCI To Block Unknown Requests To Fix

Beware! Users of BHIM app on their Android devices should be aware of this issue where it has been addressed that accepting collect money request from unknown virtual payment would be problematic. Do not accept anyway, as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has acknowledged that with the next update, it can be fixed. Until then be careful.

What is BHIM app? Actually, it is an app based on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) that aims to simplify cashless payments. Last week, PM Narendra Modi has officially made available for download BHIM app at DigiDhan Mela in New Delhi. The app allows users to send money to recipients from their connected banks using this smartphone app. Fund transfers has been made very easier using it, but some Twitter users have been also reporting of spam payment requests from unknown addresses.

What’s exact problem with BHIM app?

To make things a bit easier, the stock VPA ID is your ‘phone number @upi’. For example, if your phone number is 8978985555, your VPA ID will be ‘8978985555@upi’. This allows spammers to randomly enter any phone number and target users to make payments. The modus operandi is similar to the Nigerian email scamsters, where they hope that at least a small percentage of users who receive the payment request would unknowingly make the payment.

What you should know is that the BHIM app does let you create a personalized VPA under the profile tab on the Home screen. Thus, you can create a new VPA, something like deepak@upi, batman@upi, and son on. But unfortunately, there’s no option to delete the default VPA. In case of bank apps, such as ICICI’s Pockets, HDFC Bank, Canara Bank’s eMpower, SBI Bank’s SBI Pay among other, allow you to deregister the profile and delete the VPA you created earlier. To avoid the spam problems, BHIM app should have an option to delete the original VPS once a personalized one is created.

Alternatively, other problems with BHIM app is that makers probably didn’t think about spam payment requests. Although, BHIM app has enough safegaurd to protect users from frauds and it uses a three-step verification process before the payments are approved. Still there’s no option to report spam payment requests on the official BHIM app as yet. So spammers can eventually send requests to as many numbers as they can without the fear of getting blacklisted.
