Download: Apple Releases iOS 12 Public Beta 3, tvOS 12 Public Beta 4 To Testers

Download of iOS 12 public beta 3 as well as tvOS 12 public betas has officially been released and made available via Apple Beta Software Program. Within 24-hours of iOS 12 beta 4 and tvOS 12 beta 4 aimed at developer testing, Apple has pushed out the public beta seeds for testing.

The latest public beta builds for iOS 12 and tvOS 12 is available to download with immediate effect for all compatible iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV Hardware.

During this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple showcased iOS 12 and tvOS 12 new features, which is set to be released for general public in the fall. Taking the third public beta of tvOS 12, it is supported on both the fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV set-top boxes.

While iOS 12 is essentially the exact same version which was pushed out to developers 24-hours prior. Of course, it may come with a different public-facing naming convention but it has the same build number and will contain the exact same changes and inclusions. It would make sense for Apple to keep developer-facing and public-facing betas in parity with one another in terms of version numbers, but that doesn’t detract from what’s actually on the table.

Apart from making the usual improvements, enhancements, and putting bug fixes in place to eradicate issues as reported in previous releases, Apple has also made some immediate tweaks to its USB Restricted Mode – in place to defeat GrayKey box brute force mechanisms.

With this new change, now, devices will immediately require a user to enter a valid passcode in order to be connected to an external device over USB. This will remove the hour-long window which previously gave GrayKey box owners the ability to connect to the device and do the necessary work to brute force entry.

This seems to be a small change, it appears to be business as usual for Apple, which involves fixes, improvements, and under the hood, changes to try and get iOS 12 fully ready for a final public release later in the year.

Those who are currently involved in Apple Beta Software Program and have been testing earlier versions, then you can head to Settings > General > Software Update and grab the latest download right now over-the-air.

As far as what’s new, there isn’t much to tackle within the new features department. One of the biggest new additions is support for Dolby Atmos for improved audio quality while watching specific, supported content on Apple TV 4 and ATV 4K sets.

In addition to that, the fourth-and-fifth generation Apple TV units will also support “Zero Sign-On”. With this feature, when you are on your TV provider’s broadband network, the supported and compatible channels will automatically populate without actually logging into anything. Charter Spectrum will be the first to support this feature, with more providers coming down the pace in the line eventually.

Apple is also adding a new Aerials backgrounds feature to tvOS 12, with new images of the planet earth which were captured by astronauts on the International Space Station. These all will include both day shots and night images.
