Samsung W2018 Announced: A New Luxurious Smart Flip Phone With Widest Aperture Camera Lens

Samsung W2018 has officially been announced as a new expensive flip phone during a launch event in China. An absolute phone is here, the Samsung W2018, specs are on par with the S8 and Note 8 with one exception: the camera lens.

It switches between f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture, Perhaps this same tech will end up on the Galaxy S9? Smartphone makers are always been pushing for the fastest-possible camera aperture, and until today, the record was held by LG V30 with its f/1.6 lens. But it didn’t take long before Samsung hit back with an even lower f-stop.

It’s official now, Samsung has announced the W2018 which is its tenth extravagant dual-screen flip phone. Made it exclusively available for China Telecom’s “Heart Of The World” charity series. Likely to be priced at above $1,500.

The W2018 is the latest addition to Samsung’s W line, which gets updated with a new flip phone every year. This date, it’s also the 10th anniversary of the W series, which is still popular in South Asia specifically. And yes, they are priced higher than typical Samsung global flagships, like the S8 and Note 8. A cheesy Chinese ad for the phone reads, “Hi Bixby, what’s true luxury?”

To our surprise, rather than simply repackaging existing flagship components into this form factor, Samsung claims that the W2018’s 12-megapixel rear camera can capture sharp images in less light with an aperture of f/1.5 than the cameras on rival phones can. Up front, it also has a 5-megapixel front camera. Samsung definitely threw in some new tech this time around, not only with an even lower aperture, but it can also switch f/2.4 for a deeper depth of field when lighting is ideal and capture more of the background in photos.

The camera sensor of the W2018 is otherwise pretty much identical to those on the S8 series and the wide-angle imager on the Note 8. It features larger 1.4um pixels, dual-pixel auto-focus, and optical image stabilization.

The phone will launch with Android Nougat, instead of 8.0 Orea. The W2018 has a 4.2-inch full HD AMOLED don’t display, and a 4.2-inch 1080p inner display, a rear fingerprint reader, dual SIM slots, NFC. Like other Samsung models, there’s a Bixby button for voice assistance. Another first for Samsung’s premium line of flip phones, which started supporting Chinese voice input as of last month.

This means you have a new dedicated button on the side of the phone to toggle Samsungs very own digital assistant on W2018 flipper. It comes in Gold and Platinum in a metal-and-glass body protected by Gorilla Glass.

It’s equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 256GB storage options plus a USB-C port (yes, the W2017 still had a micro-USB port). Even there is an iris scanner if you prefer using that to unlock, but it’s only accessible when you flip open the phone.

Interestingly, the Samsung’s new W2018 flip phone surprisingly has a small 2,300mAh battery package. As an attempt to sweeten the deal for luxury lovers, Samsung says that W2018 buyers also get perks like concierge help at airports and subways, free software tech support, and a hotline just for VIPs.

Neither Samsung nor China Telecom had confirmed the price for the W2018 at the time of writing this post. The phone will get released in China first and the price is yet to be announced. Guess what, it might be even higher than the W2017’s price tag of $3,000. As both parties have donated a total of four million yuan (about $605,000) to the China Youth Development Foundation to help build ten “Heart Of The World Samsung Smart Schools” in rural areas next year. Each and every school will be equipped with PCs, tablets, smartphones and interactive whiteboards, in the hopes of helping as well as influencing other schools by training teachers with this equipment.

That’s a lot to pay for tech support and taking clear photos at night. Stay tuned to know more about the Samsung W2018 flip phone.
