Pokémon Duel is a strategy board game that has been launched on iOS and Android, and you can download it right now for free. Here’s everything you need to know.
Pokémon Go has a new friend on mobile today; Pokémon Duel released onto the iOS App Store and Google Play Store for mobile gamers and was really expecting. Now sitting alongside Pokémon Go, is the Pokemon Company’s brand new gaming proposition; Pokemon Duel, which is a new, free board game that uses iconic Pokémon figures and allows gamers to jump into head-to-head matches against one another in competitive duels.
Duel is a free-to-play title on both iOS and Android, brings with it Pikachu and new friends to the board game than traditional Pokémon experience. Players build a party of six Pokémon charcters and move them across a playing field dotted with spaces where the creatures can attack, flank or block their opponents’ adorable armies. The first player to reach the enemy’s goal wins.
Given the success of Pokemon Go, and how Trainers have turned into in-app purchases, the Pokemon Company is going with the same strategy ‘freeto-download’ and play model with this latest release, which offers a surprising amount of depth and complexity once you get into. In a mobile gaming industry worth almost $36 billion anually, Pokemon Go managed to collect $950 million of that last year alone in six month of availability.
As for the actual game itself, gamers are asked to build a Deck of their favorite figures, and then jump into a League Match as part of a competition against players from all over the world. Duels are held in real-time vs rivals, meaning that Internet-connectivity is a necessary aspect to Pokemon Duel. Progressing gamers are rewarded with additional items and figures for victory:
The rules are simple! The object is to be the first player to get one of your figures to your opponent’s goal. How will you get to the goal? You’ll need to carefully choose your route! In duels, you and your opponent take turns moving your figures. Set up a strategic formation and attack your opponent, or simply block their path—it’s all about tactics! Plan your strategy and defeat your opponents in this game of cat and mouse!
The goal is to get one of your pieces onto the goal on your opponent’s side of the board. To do that, you have a team of six Pokemon charcters, which you can build and customize, and you vs your opponents take turns moving pieces. This step-up means, even though the boards are realtively small and simple, your focus should always be divided. On one side, you have to protect your own goal, and on the other you need to keep pushing forward to get the win.
Being able to use some of our favorite Pokemon figures in a game of cat and mouse against players all over the globe is definitely an appealing prospect.
Each and every character in Pokemon Duel has unique abilities and a set number of steps it can take per turn. When a Pokemon lands of a space next to an enemy, the duel begins: Spin the Data Disk to determine which attacks your character will use. Plus, use a special plate at the beginning of each turn to power up your Pokemon in different ways.
Pokemon Duel is available to download now, free-of-charge, with optional in-purchases ranging from $0.99 to $19.99.
