A Bloomberg report surfaced claiming that Apple is currently testing using 3D facial detection to use on iPhone 8 as a replacement for Touch ID fingerprint authentication. What if the reports claimed are true? Here are the details on that topic now.
A new alleged iPhone 8 report says it all, that Apple’s 2017 smartphone will feature advanced 3D facial recognition technology ditching the fingerprint Touch ID. However, iPhone 8 announcement and subsequent release continues to edge closer, with September expected to be when Apple’s big unveiling takes place.
Prior to that, leaks showing no sign of letting up. It is a wonder as to whether there will be any surprises left when the device is finally announced, and the latest of those potential leaks comes courtesy of Bloomberg, which reports that Apple’s iPhone 8 will house new facial recognition tech.
If the new reports are to be trusted and believed, then it is also said the new iPhones could include the ProMotion increased refresh rate displays seen in the newly launched iPad Pros as well as dedicated Apple Neural Engine chip for handling AI.
Rumors before that, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a report, also claiming the iPhone 8 will use face detection features to replace Touch ID functionality. Now, Bloomberg claims that this will be made possible thanks to the advanced 3D face mapping technology that will not only work quickly, but also has the potential to be more secure than Touch ID’s fingerprint scanning, including for unlocking devices and authorizing payments.
…Apple is testing an improved security system that allows users to log in, authenticate payments, and launch secure apps by scanning their face, according to people familiar with the product. This is powered by a new 3-D sensor, added the people, who asked not to be identified discussing technology that’s still in development. The company is also testing eye scanning to augment the system, one of the people said.
The Bloomberg report is the first we’ve seen to claim the iPhone 8 may feature ProMotion display technology first introduced on the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad last month. ProMotion displays are fully capable of updating at a higher refresh rates which dramatically reduces motion blur specifically when scrolling.
The report cites a new dedicated chip internally referred to as the Apple Neural Engine which will help drive the ProMotion display as well as artificial intelligence tasks.
“The sensor’s speed and accuracy are focal points of the feature. It can scan a user’s face and unlock the iPhone within a few hundred milliseconds, the person said. It is designed to work even if the device is laying flat on a table, rather than just close up to the face. The feature is still being tested and may not appear with the new device. However, the intent is for it to replace the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, according to the person. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.”

The same that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 already includes a similar feature in which a face can be recognized in order to unlock a device. Iris recognition technology is also included, which is far good news, considering researchers proved very quickly that facial recognition in that particular phone can be fooled by something as simple as a photograph.
Back in May, the first reported new chip, which is expected to handle image recognition, text prediction, and other AI tasks. Apple similarly includes a dedicated M-series chip for detecting motion and other metrics already.
Finally, the rest new detail about the iPhone 8 we may have learned today came out when KGI predicted the premium OLED display model will ship in fewer colors (black only?) than the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus which may be more iterative updates. Apple’s tech is expected to be more secure thanks to its use of 3D mapping, though the proof of that particular pudding will most certainly be in the eating. Stay tuned for More!
