Hulu To Let Users Download Movies, TV Shows For Offline Viewing Like Netflix Offering

Hulu CEO has recently announced that the company plans to add offline viewing as well as live streaming and cloud DVR. Now that Hulu confirmed that it will offer offline playback in 2017, with users set to be able to download movies and TV shows for viewing even when an internet connection is not available, nearby.

Soon, you won’t even need a strong internet signal to watch your favorite movies and TV shows on the go – at least for a Hulu Plus user. This year, Hulu Plus aims to drastically change its model. Much like Netflix’s offline viewing feature.

The plethora of online streaming services mean that these days, the changes are good enough that you will be able to find something to watch, as long as you’re actually a subscriber to all of the big players out there. Hulu Plus users, you will also be able to watch live TV from a number of broadcast and cable networks – including Disney, Fox, and CBS – as well as use Cloud DVR to record that live TV. Being able to stream video is arguably the feature of media delivery, but there has always been a problem for those who, can’t always be connected to the internet.

Flights are a good example of times when an internet connection may be unavailable for an extended period of time, making offline playback very-important. Being able to download content for watching offline hasn’t always been something streaming companies have made possible.

In an interview with Adweek, Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins was asked whether the company had any plans to allow users to download content for watching at their time-being, to which he responded:

“We’ve been working awfully hard this year to get it right and to make it integrated seamlessly into a live and on-demand service. It’s really exciting, and I think it’s going to work really well. It’s going to be fully functional, just like you could expect from a regular DVR.”

With both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix already offering the same option via their own apps, the news that Hulu will also do the same sometime in the next 11 months. Much like its competition, Hulu’s download offering won’t be available across all TV shows and movies, but something is better than nothing.

Hulu has yet to announce an official release date for the new features, but CEO promised the service will launch “in the next few months”. Let’s just hope that “2017” doesn’t mean the last day of December!
