Instagram has the ability to chat with someone who is in your follower’s list on the platform for quite some time now, but now the feature is getting even more helpful in letting you know who’s actually online to talk.
Like other self-respecting social networks, Instagram has its own integrated chat feature, the ability to direct message other folks on the Facebook-owned platform. Announced already, that Instagram is now rolling out a new feature that will let you know when your friends and Instagram contacts are online as well as available to char on direct.
Now, within the Instagram app in various areas, when a contact is online and using the app, there will be a noticeable green dot next to their name. You’ll see this green dot next to friends profile picture in different spaces on an Instagram application.
Previously, it was unable to consider when a friend of Instagram is available for chat or not, but after pushing out the status indicator update, the Instagram seems to have been solved the mystery. That new green dot will only be visible with folks who you have spoken to in a DM before, or with your Instagram friends/contacts who have followed you back.
An earlier version of the Instagram app was working in the Direct inbox, where it showed a green dot for active users, and time stamp (such as Active 18m ago) for users who were currently active and live. With that said, you won’t be able to see if some random contacts on Instagram are online or not, just by going to their profile.
“When your friends are active on Instagram, you’ll see a green dot next to their profile picture in various spaces within the app, including the Direct inbox and your friend list when you share a post from feed. You will only see status for friends who follow you or people who you have talked to in Direct. You can easily hide your own status and turn off the ability to see when your friends are active in your settings.”
When someone of your friends is online, they will have a small green dot on their avatar in the direct messaging list. Once seen, you will notice they’re online and available to chat. Instagram will also offer status messages like “Active x minutes ago” and “Typing…”
Instagram is also giving you the ability to hide/turn off your online availability status dot, so you need not worry. To disable the feature, you’ll need to visit “Activity Status” in the apps Settings menu, which is a default one. You can turn off the toggle on iOS and Android and it’ll not show your online status to everyone.
As per Instagram itself, this is meant to give users more of a real-time feel to communication on the platform moving forward. Now you will know if the person you really want to chat is online and live and or trying to get in touch with is even using the app at the same time. Also giving Instagram users the ability to hide their status, too. If you don’t want to appear online forever, you can make that be the case.
