Meet Project Skybender: Google Is Developing Solar-Powered Drones To Beam 5G Internet

In Mexico it was spotted that Google is testing the solar-powered planes under codename “Project SkyBender,” which actually was tought to be a trail technology that transmits data up to 40 times faster than 4G LTE, and according to the Guardian it was a secret Google SkyBender project that will beam high-speed 5G Internet through drones based on solar.

It’s the Project SkyBender, as Google calling it and using an “optionally piloted plane called Centaur” along with solar-powered drones by Google Titan. As we already know that the search giant has acquired the ‘Titan Aerospace” company in 2014 and at MWC 2015 it has indicated that the drones would start conducting their first-tests to bean down Internet from the skies and it did.

New reports on Google’s secret Project is taking to the next level, with focus being on high-speed 5G Internet. Skybender has set up its own flight control system at Spaceport America in New Mexico, which incidentally the site where Virgin Galatic is supposed to start testing its flights, specifically meant for space travel.

Skybender is the Google’s 5G Internet that relies on “high frequency millimeter waves” which in theory can transmit GBs worth of data every second, but at the same time it has much shorter wave-length than current mobile-cellular signals, which will apparently fade away in seconds. The report also adds that Google Sybender needs to ensure “focused transmissions”, which are a worthwhile difficult and enery-consuming.

Drones, which are not the ones that Google is testing on to beam down the Internet. Facebook’s Project Aquila will also see similar “solar-powered” planes with wingspan bigger than a Boeing 737, beam down Internet from up the skies. These are something which can stay up for months will cruise at 60,000 feet, much higher than commercial aircrafts, and the planes have a footprint of 100km diameter. Great!

Now talking anot another Google Project, called Loon. Focuses on to beam Internet from the skies via giant floating gas balloons. Project Loon balloons will however travel in the startosphere, approximately 20 km above the earth’s surface, latching on to layers of wind as directed by software algorithms to determine where they actually need to go. In the end, they will form one large communications network by means.

The Project Loon’s inflated envolops are made of sheets of polyethylene plastic, 15 meters wide and 12 meters tall when fully inflated. Designed to saty up for at least 100 days in one go. Notably, Google has announced that plans to bring Project Loon to India live, but unfortunately regarding the security concerns it has been raised down.

While the Google Skybender project is obviously been a technology that the search giant is testing them with multiple drones, as per the obtained under public records law. In order to in-house the drones and support aircraft, Google s temporarily using 15,000 square feet of hanger space in the glamorous Gateway to Space terminal designed by Richard Foster for the much0delayed Virgin Galactic spaceflights.

For Project Skybender, Google has also installed its own dedicated flight control centre in the nearby Spaceflight Operations Center, which is seperate from the original terminal. Project SkyBender is using drones to experiment with millimetre-wave radio transmissions, technologies the could eventually underpin next generation 5G wireless network access to. Ultimately envisages thousands of high altitude “self-flying aircraft” delivering internet access around the world.

Google is said to be paying Virgin Galactic a sum of $1,000 per day for the use of a hangar in the Gateway to Space building, but had to split its SkyBender tests into two seperate flight campaigns to ease Virgin Galactic concerns. Google also had to promise not to take any photographs inside the building.

Expected that Virgin Galactic to be unveil ist new SpaceShipTwo at the Spaceport in February 2016, and to begin flights there in 2016. For now, Google has no words to speak and comment on this report. Stay tuned!
