After official announcement of Reliance Jio 4G SIM and its LTE data tarrif plans, Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular networks gone into darkness, as the war begins with the drop-down of their market shares. But it didn’t stand still for as long as the RIM expected, rather India’s top operator Bharti Airtel has started its preparation in gearing up to engage with an all-new entrant Reliance Jio Infocom, on another front data speed.
On Wednesday, Bharti Airtel has said they have deployed technology known as “carrier aggregation” in Mumbai and Kerala to combine different bands of spectrum and create larger blocks of aiwaves to offer even faster and more stable 4G data services for mobile phone users. That enables peak download speeds of up to as much as 135 Mbps, which is somewhat faster than what user get on a normal 4G network.
In Jio’s ongoing trail phase, a relatively empty network has offered speeds of 80-90 mbps, when Airtel virtually has touted 40-80 percent faster broadband speeds as a big difference factor with incumbent telecos.
Rohan Dhamija, head-India and South Asia said at Analysys Mason, which is a telecom, media and technology advisory firm, that “Faster speeds achieved through carrier aggregation will transform 4G into a better product for consumers and will give carriers an additional marketing handle.” Also mentioned, “Potentially, they (carriers) can publicise it and it could be a part of their marketing strategy as they would want to highlight it to consumers as a differentiating factor.”
While the data speed battle comes on the back of an anticipated tariff war, given the fact that “Jio’s offering services at substantially lower” rates than its rivals. Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular have already dropped effective data prices by 67-percent for prepaid customers. Airtl has started offering free and unlimited voice calls with some post-paid data packs.
It seems Airtel planning to widen the war on the speed front by deploying the technology in other areas in the next few months. With the help of spectrum acquired from Aircel through a trading deal, Airtel can undoubtedly offer enhanced speeds in 13 circles in India.
