iOS 9.3.1 / 9.3 Jailbreak Status Update For iPhone And iPad

It was in a surprise the hacking community has launched the iOS 9.1 Pangu jailbreak in early March and done with the passion within the jailbreak community was reignited to. Just like the original Pangu 9 jailbreak for iPhone, iPad running iOS 9.0.x, this solution landed literally out of nowhere. Although having this Windows and Mac compatible tool for iOS 9.1 is not fair, won’t raise the immidiate question of “what’s the current state of an iOS 9.3.1 and 9.3 jailbreak”.

However, Apple has released iOS 9.3.1 to patch a bug related to how universal links work in iOS after iOS 9.3 randomly started crashing when tapped in Mobile Safari and other applications.

Now that we don’t have iOS 9.3.1 jailbreak available for download, is there any tool coming for it?From the security perspective, not much changed in iOS 9.3.1 compared to iOS 9.3, Apple’s updates page doesn’t list any further changes for 9.3.1, means whatever vulnerabilities Apple patched in iOS 9.3 remains as is in iOS 9.3.1. Technically, and we mean it, if there’s any exploit out which worked in iOS 9.3, should work on iOS 9.3.1 as usual.

Those of you follows regular jailbreak updates closely will be familiar with that Italian developer Luca Tedesco, been involved in a lot of activity of late. That includes involvement in successully jailbreaking and posting a video showing jailbroken iOS 9.3 on an iPhone shortly after Apple’s initial release of the first iOS 9.3 beta. The evidence coming from the Italian video shows that iOS 9.3 and possibly iOS 9.3.1 are both capable of being jailbroken. Unfortunately, he dosn’t plan to release it as a public jailbreak yet.

The Chinese jailbreak teams Pangu and TaiG usually don’t prodice any updates prior to a release and that’s where they leave us. At least that is how it has been with their recent jailbreak releases. At this poiunt with iOS 9.3.1 out and the latest Apple devices, iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro available to purchase in stores, we can only hope that they have something working on for jailbreak community and will roll out once it’s ready for primetime.

What’s next! Should you update to iOS 9.3.1? If you’re already running on iOS 9.3, you probably, because the version of iOS 9.3 firmware has a nasty universal links bug and updating to iOS 9.3.1 shouldn’t hurt your chanes of jailbreaking in future as iOS 9.3 and 9.3.1 are essentially same from security point of view and stay there if and wait for a potential jailbreak release. Possibilities are there the firmware version of iOS 9.3.1 will get the next jailbreak release. Also, since iOS 9.2.1 is still being signed as of the writing, you can downgrade to from iOS 9.3/9.3.1 now if you want to.

To remind you then, there is currently no jailbreak available for all iOS 9.2, 9.2.1, 9.3 and the latest iOS 9.3.1. Those who care about security and don’t want jailbreaks should update to the latest iOS 9.3.1. For those don’t want a jailbreak should stay or downgrade to iOS 9.2.1 and wait for the next jailbreak release.
