Meet Raspberry Pi 3 With 64-bit Chip, Built-In Wi-Fi And Bluetooth Available For Just £30

Today an all-new Raspberry Pi model has appeared on Federal Communications Commission’s testing document that reveals its coming with wireless capabilities. Although about the latest, Raspberry Pi Foundation has not officially announced any release date time frame. But its details have been aired currently, which can be found right after this jump.

It’s the third-major version of the Raspberry Pi, said to go on sale Monday, with a $35/£30 credit card-sized Raspberry Pi 3 Model B integrated with a 64-bit processor and embedded WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities. The new Model B Pi still run 32-bit operating systems, but definitely will be 50% faster than its predecessor.

Previous versions of Raspberry Pi needed USB adapters to get WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, now that it has given a refresh to its chipset and architecture, the Pi 3 supports 802.11n Wi-Fi (2.5GHz only) and Bluetooth 4.0 without an adapter, freeing up its four USB ports for other connectivity options.

When compared Pi 3 with last year’s Raspberry Pi 2, it used Broadcom system-on-chip with a 32-bit, 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor. While the new Raspberry Pi 3 upgrades its chipset and CPU to 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 and clocked at 1.2GHz quad-core. This device now expected to be about 50-percent faster than previous due to the increase in clock speeds and architectural improvements, as Raspberry Pi creator Eben Upton says.

The main reason we’re excited about Cortex A53 is it’s a better 32-bit processor [than A7]. You can run in 32-bit mode, and the 64-bit ARM processors also support a new ARMv8 instruction set that’s capable of speeding up both 32-bit and 64-bit operations.”

The aforementioned means that 64-bit operating systems could come to the Pi, and still have no plans yet, Upton said. He also speaks about what “we’re going to wait until someone can demonstrate a concrete benefit to going to 64-bit before we make that our standard”.

The Pi 3 also has a 1GB of RAM, which is the same amount of memory used last year. For RAM usage, 64-bit is only necessary if you have more than 4GB. With grapgics upgrades, the Raspberry Pi 3 using Broadcom’s 400MHz VideoCore IV, instead of 250MHz version. It supports fullHD 1080p video at 60fps using the H.264 format, up from 30fps. the new Pi 3 hardware also gains H.265 support for the first time, but limited to 1080p at 30fps.

Ethernet connections on Pi 3 remains at 100Mbps, and the device looks pretty identical to the last years gadget, with the ports and pins all in the smae places. With Pi 3’s added computing power makes it “more credible as a PC replacement,” and that too coming with wireless capabilities also makes it a better “gateway hub device for connecting lower-cost Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled sensors.”

There’s also a Raspberry Pi Compute Module, an even more compact board specifically designed for industrial applications. It will go on sale in the second quarter this year. The new Compute Module will not otherwise include wireless connectivity, but nevertheless will have the same 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and one GB of memory as the Raspberry Pi 3.
