The BlackBerry Leap smartphone is the Canada-based company’s latest handset announced back in March at the MWC 2015 press conference in Barcelona. Now hits the retail stores in India. Although, it was expected to go on sale in India very soon as it comes with a mid-range specs, with BlackBerry OS 10 and with its professional credentials and a low price tag to offer a gateway product at an affordable enough.
“The device will be an entry phone for these professionals who can then further subscribe to BlackBerry’s other services,” said BlackBerry India MD Sunil Lalvani. “It’s not a low-cost device and is positioned in the mid-tier segment. We expect a good uptake of this device in the Indian market.”
The global roll-out of the handset began in the UK last month, followed by the US, France, and Germany availability. Now lands on Indian market, for a mere low costing.
The BlackBerry Leap implemented with a compact 5-inch 720p HD display. It is powered by a 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960) processor with Adreno 225 GPU, paired with 2GB of RAM onboard. Sporting an 8MP camera on its back which is an Auto-Focus sensor with LED Flash, 1080p HD video recording at 30fps. It also employs a 2MP Fixed-Focus front-facing camera with 720p HD video recording used for video calling / chats.
The phone named BlackBerry Leap runs on on its own BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 OS out of the box. Supports 4G LTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS + GLONASS and packs a 2800mAh non-removable battery. With 16GB internal memory, expandable up to 128GB via microSD card.
Priced at $275 globally, the BlackBerry Leap in India is expected to go with a price around Rs 22,000 when its available on May 12. Notably, this new BlackBerry phone will not be exclusive to any online partner and will only be promoted through offline as well as online retail portals.
