Foldable iPhone Could Become A Reality In 2020, Believes Analyst

A new rumor fakes that Apple will launch a foldable iPhone in 2020 that could eventually double as an iPad. Here are the details.

In fact, Apple will launch up to almost three new iPhones this year, but not this early in March 2018, rather it may go live in September. And there’s another focus that attention being lavished on what we could see as far out as 2020.

An analyst at Bank of America Merrill Nynch, Wamsi Mohan described, it could be an iPhone that is foldable in the middle which will in turn allow it to be opened out to potentially “double up as a tablet.”

With that said, Mohan also suggests that Apple could end up launching a radically designed iPhone with a foldable display within the next two years. For that, Apple is reportedly working with its suppliers towards the launch of a foldable iPhone in 2020.

He was actually explaining his prediction via a research note which was obtained by CNBC. That note based on a week that he spent in Asia, apparently meeting with companies which are part of Apple’s current supply chain. And was been told while he was there will otherwise lead to a sea change in how iPhones look and work within the next two years.

“We expect the iPhones this fall to be largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past,” analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note to clients Friday. “Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.”

Samsung, on the other hand, is currently the leader in foldable display technology, and we assume for years that the company is on the verge of launching a smartphone with the foldable display. But yet not have seen anything coming from the company so far in this regard. Nevertheless, there were rumors and speculation about it, have chances that the Korean company would end up launching a foldable smartphone later this year after affirmation of a foldable smartphone being in the work from a high-level company executive.

Foldable displays do currently exist in that devices like the iPhone X already use displays that can be folded at the edges to make a given design possible. When you consider folding a display like Mohan speaks of, you are also likely to need to fold components – and that’s a whole different ballgame.

LG Displays can also be folded, while we have heard rumors of foldable iPhones, or indeed foldable Android phones in the past, now the thought of one actually coming to market in a package that Apple would consider acceptable just does not seem viable in the timescales mentioned here.

It’s unclear how OEMs will take advantage of foldable displays in smartphones. While it sounds cool that your smartphone can convert into a tablet thanks to its foldable display, it’s also unclear whether the technology is at that level or not. Prototype devices look and behave just as Mohan described are a reality today, but again, they are just that, prototypes.

Even if Apple has patent in place for it, it could also turn a prototype of this ilk into a product ready to be sold in Apple stores worldwide by 2020 remains to be seen.
