Apple Working On Future iPhone iSight Camera With Triple-Lens System For Increased Optical Zoom

A new report today claims and predicts that Apple will release an iPhone with three lenses and improved optical zoom as early as next year. Prior to that, iPhone x has one of the best dual-camera systems on the market, but it seems likely that Apple is set to take things to another level with the next iPhone model as soon as next year, that too, with a new triple-lens rear camera in the works.

According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News report, which claims that the trio lens array will include a 12-megapixel iSight camera as its main unit, with additional lenses included.

The hardware shift would come just two years after Apple introduced its own kind of iSight Duo dual lens system on the iPhone 7 Plus which is also present on the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. With that said, as competition in the smartphone market increases – particularly around cameras, Apple will launch an iPhone with iSight Trio lenses for the first time during the second half of 2019.

If the aforementioned rumor is anything to go true, we will get our hands on an iPhone with three lenses and with increased 5X optical zoom sensor. The report also notes that Huawei has already launched such a smartphone with the Huawei P20 Pro (picture below). Here is how P20 Pro uses its trio of rear lenses:

The primary sensor is a 40MP RBG sensor which is backed up by a 20MP secondary monochrome sensor. That primary sensor should take solid photos with an f/1.8 aperture, and the secondary should be able to improve those as well at f/1.6.

Rounding out that already impressive array is a third 8MP telephoto sensor which is used for “long-range” photography and helps makes the 5x hybrid zoom on this phone possible.

As far as the report says, the camera will have a 6P lens design with a 5x zoom although the details as to whether that zoom is optical or digital are unclear at the moment. Given that the iPhone 8 with its single-lens has up to 5x digital zoom, while the dual-lens setup of the iPhone x and iPhone 8 Plus affords the higher end devices a 2x optical zoom as well as a 10x digital zoom, we’ll bet triple-lens will be for 5x optical zoom in 2019 iPhone.

Apple is not the first phone maker to follow this three camera lens concept, as mentioned that Huawei already ships the P20 Pro with the same three lenses include a massive 40MP primary shooting configuration. The other two lenses are 20MP and 8MP offerings, with the latter being a telephoto lens with a 3x optical zoom.

For the alleged iPhone sporting a similar setup, the report predicts it will come with 12MP lenses capable of up to five times zoom. This is the first we’ve heard of a triple lens iPhone launching on future iPhones. With plenty of advantages to going with a three lens setup, Huawei device apparently proving to be capable of taking photos that are better looking to those on the Galaxy S9, Pixel 2 and iPhone X.

As for the year 2018, we’re expecting Apple to release three new iPhone models; a successor to the 5.8-inch iPhone X, a new 6.5-inch OLED model, and a more affordable 6.1-inch LCD model. The 2019 iPhone is still a long way, so we will have to wait for additional rumors, skepticism for now. before we can firmly say this one is on the cards.
