Apple To Fix iOS 11 Reachability Bug In The Next Software Update

After responding to an iPhone user in an email, Apple’s Craig Federighi confirmed that the company is currently looking forward to fix that which affects the Reachability function in iOS 11.

Device owner was unhappy with the removal of a feature which otherwise allowed the Notification Center to be invoked in iOS 1 when Reachability was active. For that issue, he Micheal took the opportunity to email Senior Vice President of Software Engineering and a response from Apple’s Federighi has confirmed that Apple is working on “fixing it.”

You and many do not even know about Reachability feature in iOS, but it’s essentially a way for owners of Apple’s plus-sized iPhone to double-tap the Home button to animate the user-interface into a position where it can be accessed and interacted with in one-handed mode of sorts.

This same functionality was in iOS 1, when Reachability was active, it was possible to place a gesture on the center of the display to invoke Notification Center to become active. Seemingly it was removed with the early iOS 11 betas and was never added back again. The iOS device owner took exception to that problem and issued the following speculative email to Craig:

Ever since iOS 11 was released as a beta, the ability to invoke the Notification Center from the middle of the screen during reachability was removed. This was an incredibly useful feature as one didn’t have to awkwardly try to take ones’ thumb all the way back to the top even though reachability was invoked—defeating the whole purpose of it for one crucial task.

If this was done by design I fail to see the purpose or any benefit whatsoever to its removal. If it’s a bug, I hope Apple can get around to finally fixing this mistake/oversight.

So Apple is working on a fix for a Reachability bug that prevents the new iOS 11 Cover Screen with Notifications from being accessible from the middle of the iPhone’s display. While this iOS 11 Reachability bug was not been well publicized though, but spotted by reader and complained about it already.

In iOS 11, the Notification Center and the Lock Screen have been merged altogether into one, so a swipe down in the middle of the iPhone’s display should bring up/down the lock screen Cover Sheet to show a user’s Notifications, but it doesn’t actually work correctly.

In order to access Cover Sheet Notifications in iOS 11, users need to swipe down from the very top of the iPhone’s screen, meaning there’s no alternative solution to access Notifications one-handed through Reachability at the current time.

It’s not clear as yet, but Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering simply replied with a very short and succinct “we are fixing it” retrot. No additional information has been shared but we can only assume that Apple is aware of this issue, and of course handling the case and will push a fix for it in the very next future with a new version of iOS 11.0.x, likely in the form of iOS 11.0.3.

Note: iOS 11.1 Beta 2 didn’t bring the fix which was already made available to download for developers and public testers. Rather bring back the 3D Touch App Switcher, another feature that iOS users have been missing. Stay tuned for the next software update to get a fix for Reachability bug in iOS 11.
