Samsung Galaxy S9 Retail Packaging Leak Confirms New Specs And Features

It seems like Samsung executive DJ Koh has already confirmed that his company will officially be unveiling the Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones at next months Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Prior to that, now, we are also seeing what could potentially be our first glimpse at the S9’s retail packaging, which also gives us an early insight into the technical specifications and features of the device.

Now, a massive Samsung leak has confirmed the most significant features of its new flagship Galaxy smartphone. The unconfirmed image shows the rear of what is purported to be the official retail packaging for Samsung’s new handset.

First up, the top corner of the box is clearly marked with “Samsung Galaxy S9,” and then carries on to give a list of the main focal points of the device. Believe it or not, confirming that Samsung’s new hardware will ship with a 5.8-inch full rectangle QuadHD+ sAMOLED display. If you take into account the rounded corners, you get to know 5.6-inch stated on the box as well.

What’s more interesting here is the Galaxy S9’s few features which are very impressive. Like? There will also be a SuperSpeed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with integrated optical image stabilization (OIS) with a variable F1.5 – F2.4 aperture.

The camera with such aperture will offer ‘Super Slo-mo’ video recording at the 1230fps 4K mode as well as coming with an 8-megapixel forward-facing shooter complete with autofocus functionality. As aforementioned, the primary lens is stated to pack a f/1.5 aperture, which could mean really good things from a photography perspective.

The introduction of stereo speakers (a first on Galaxy phones) is more dedicated. From an audio perspective, the information on the leaked box suggests that the hardware will come complete with AKG tuned stereo speakers and accompanying earphones. If not, there’s also mention of an embedded iris scanner but no mention of the fingerprint scanner which is predicted to move into a more central position on the rear of the device.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ duo will be rated as water and dust resistant at IP68. And there is support for wireless charging.

Finally, the retail box also confirms that the Galaxy S9 – and presumably S9+ – will come with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal memory. Yes, of course, the device will also be secured by Samsung’s own Knox security features, which is proudly displayed on the back of the box. With that said, there is no dual rear camera with Samsung expected to restrict this to the larger Galaxy S9+.

For the specs, we are missing: battery capacity, headphone jack retention, and the fingerprint reader. What we already knew and were expecting where Galaxy S9 is concerned is right here. It’s a matter of weeks until we get this information direct from Samsung.
