There’s online anger regarding Snapchat’s visual redesign which appears to have died now that no longer appears to be ongoing petitions to try and force the company to revert. Apart from that anger warning though, the company has now introduced video-based Group Chat capabilities, as well as Stories mentions features.
This announcement means that Snapchat users on iOS and Android will be able to enhance their communication experience within the app by getting themselves in a group-based video chat and “Mentions” feature that allows users to tag friends in snaps uploaded onto Stories.
You can video chat with up to 16 Snapchat friends or 32 with just voice. So how the group-based video call can be invoked? Well, from within an existing group conversation within the app or by hitting the video icon when a new group is created and a number of Snapchat users are added, as said, as long as that group doesn’t exceed 16 people. Once a video call is initiated, everyone in that group will be informed and will be able to join should this wish to.
Snapchat has also told that up to 32 users will be able to join the group voice chat but that its video functionality will be limited to 50% of that total, capped at 16. To tag a friend just start typing in “@,” spell out the username of the person, then tap on the name you want to be tagged.
People who see the tagged snap will be able to swipe up and add the person as a friend or watch any p[ublic stories they’ve posted. The person you tag will also be notified in the chat window that they’ve been mentioned in your story.
The good news is that a video call can be ongoing but users will be able to join purely using voice and toggle the video option on and off should they wish to do so. If you don’t want to use the camera, you can toggle it off and join with just voice. Users will also be able to filter Snapchat lenses over their faces, like the epochal rainbow vomiting mouth or puppy dog ears.
Additionally, as aforementioned, on top of the new video chat functionality is the Snapchat Stories section. This section will also be getting an update. The new functionality means that users will be able to tag another user in their Stories to ensure that the individual is alerted to its existence. A notification will also be generated and sent to anyone who has been tagged in a Stories.
All-in-all, both of these updates should definitely be beneficial to users and show that snap Inc. is somewhat committed to updating the platform. And the tagging of friends in ephemeral 24-hour snaps is already available on Instagram Stories, marking a reversal of flow that generally saw Facebook’s Instagram lifting Snapchat features.
However, the updates should be rolling out to global Snapchat users over the next coming weeks across iOS and Android.
