Opera Web Browser For Desktop PCs Gets Power Saving Mode, Now Available To Download

After introducing a free built-in Opera VPN version for developers with 265-bit encryption, today released Opera developer 39, bringing with it a dedicated power saving mode, which was already rolled out for its Opera Mobile browsers recently. How much worth it is now?

The new Opera browser for desktop is specifically designed to extend Laptop battery life by upto 50% compared to Google Chrome or any older versions of Opera. Considering on what type of hardware you’re running it, means several hours extra browsing before you need to recharge your notebook, says Opera itself.

Opera adds power-saving mode, offers “up to 50%” longer battery life
On May 12, Opera has introduced a new feature to its Windows and OS X browsers that claims will help extend battery life. This new “Power Saving Mode” is available in the developer stream and works automatically. Once the laptop’s power source has been unplugged, the battery icon will appear next to search and address field in the Opera browser. Users can click the battery icon to activate the “Power Saving Mode” and flip on the switch.

There’s is another feature that Opera browser will detect laptop’s battery and will suggest enabling power saving mode if it is running low on power. The latest update now lets you VPN feature in private browsing mode and it uses optimizations to save Battery in Opera browser for computer including reducing background activity from tabs, adapting page-redrawing frequency, and tuning video-playback parameters.

Opera Browser’s under-the-hood improvements for Power Saving Mode includes:

  • Reduced activity in background tabs
  • Waking CPU less often due to more optimal scheduling of JavaScript timers
  • Automatically pausing unused plug-ins
  • Reduced frame rate to 30 frames per second
  • Tuning video-playback parameters and forcing usage of hardware accelerated video codecs
  • Paused animations of browser themes

It is now made available to download Opera 39 developer version for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the company’s official website, which also released Opera VPN built-in ad-blocker for iOS.

Opera's New Power Saving Mode Can 'Extend Laptop Battery Life by 50 Percent

Krystian Kolondra, SVP of Engineering for Opera, said:

It’s extremely frustrating to run out of battery on your computer, whether you are out traveling, watching videos, or you have just left your charger behind. Our new power saving mode will nudge you when the laptop starts to consume battery, and, when enabled, it can increase the battery life by as much as 50%.
