It’s now official, Qualcomm has announced a follow-up to the successful Snapdragon 820 mobile processor, the SD821. It’s very likely that the Google Nexus 2016 phone will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 SoCs. Here are the details on its performance enhancements and many more.
The new flagship processor from Qualcomm is called Snapdragon 821, which is a slight update to the SD820 chipset that debuted in smartphones earlier this year and promises modest performance gains. Nevertheless, the Snapdragon 821 is said to offer 10-percent faster processing and when the likes of SD-820 has been found in virtually every high-end Android smartphones this year, particularly including Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the HTC 10, the LG G5, the OnePlus 3, Sony Xperia X Performance and inside the Xiaomi Mi5 as well.
Qualcomm also claims the Snapdragon 821 builds upon the 820’s features, that eventually provide a 10% performance increase. Its quad-core CPU runs at 2.5GHz. The company will debut in smartphones and other devices in the second half of this year.
To bump you up, the Snapdragon 821 is clocked at 2.4GHz quad-core custom 64-bit Qualcomm Kyro CPUs, compared to 2.2GHz Snapdragon 820. Qualcomm did not reveal that if this would use the same Adreno 530 GPU, but the clock speed will likely be higher than 624MHz in the SD820 CPU.
Other features includes an integrated 600Mbps X12 LTE modem. Support for up to 4K Ultra HD and comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. The Snapdragon 821-powered smartphones can be expected this year only, but in the second half of 2016.
Rather than replace the Snapdragon 820, the 821 is designed to complement and extend the competitive strengths of our Snapdragon 800 lineup.
Because the Snapdragon 820 helped improve the user experience for mobile imaging, virtual reality, battery life, and connectivity speed and reliability, all the updates we’ve included in Snapdragon 821 will help keep devices powered by Snapdragon 800 premium-tier processors at the top of people’s shopping lists into the foreseeable future.
