YouTube Announces Rebranded YouTube Music Streaming Service With Premium Subscriptions, Here Are The Details

Google is getting ready to launch a new YouTube Music service as soon as next week, with YouTube Premium Red following shortly after. YouTube Music, a streaming music platform designed to compete with the likes of Spotify and Apple Music, officially gets a launch date: May 22nd.

When differentiated, YouTube Music is self-explanatory, YouTube Premium will be a revamped version of the YouTube Red subscription that is currently available. The focus of the new service will be premium content, something RED originally set out to surface. Both changes to YouTube Music and YouTube Red were announced in a blog post yesterday.

YouTube Music will somewhat borrow the Spotify model and offer a free, ad-supported tier as well as a premium version. The paid tier, which will be called YouTube Music Premium, will be available at a cost per month. It will debut in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and South Korea before expanding to 14 other countries.

The arrival of YouTube Music will see users pay $10 per month with the existing Google Play Music service being killed off as a result. Any existing subscribers will be migrated to the new service automatically, with YouTube Music being the only music streaming service Google will offer as a result.

One of the selling points for YouTube Music will be the ability to harness the endless amount of information Google knows about you, which it will use to try to create customized listening experiences. The app, with the help of Google Assistant, will make listening recommendations based on the time of day, location, and listening patterns. It will thereby also apparently offer “an audio experience as well as a video experience,” suggesting perhaps an emphasis on music videos and other visual content.

All of the features you might expect will be available as part of YouTube Music, with personalized playlists and support for background playback of music front and center. As part of it, users will also see promos removed from music videos, although the rest of YouTube will continue to display promos as the norm.

To support the arrival of YouTube Music, new mobile and desktop apps will also arrive.

YouTube Music is a new music streaming service made for music: official songs, albums, thousands of playlists and artist radio plus YouTube’s tremendous catalog of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos that you can’t find anywhere else – all simply organized and personalized. For the first time, all the ways music moves you can be found in one place.

Meanwhile, the paid subscription service, known as YouTube Red, is being rebranded to YouTube Premium and will cost $12 ($11.99) per month instead of $9.99, will include all of the benefits of YouTube Music plus original YouTube content.

YouTube Music kicks into gear on coming Tuesday, while YouTube Premium will arrive “soon” in the aforementioned regions. A raft of other countries will come online in the weeks following either release, including Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, reland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
