Samsung’s Galaxy S9 Expected To Get iPhone X’s Animoji Feature

Samsung is reportedly said to be copying iPhone X’s most popular Animoji feature for its upcoming Galaxy S9 and S9+. According to a Korean news site, Samsung is planning on launching Galaxy S9 complete with its own 3D emoji functionality.

So Samsung’s equivalent to the iPhone X’s Animoji, 3D Emoji are supposedly more advanced than Apple’s Animoji, which would otherwise be a bold claim.

Like Animoji on iPhone X, users will be able to choose from various 3D characters, including animals, that mimic facial movements as tracked by the Galaxy S9’s facial recognition system. But the fact is clear, Samsung should reveal the name of its Animoji competitor or ripoff when the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are unveiled at Mobile World Congress on February 25.

Many details about the smartphones have already leaked this far. Now, the report adds Animoji, a feature uniquely available through iPhone X which allows device owners to map facial expressions onto 3D animated emoji characters which could be shared through the iMessage protocol or saved to the device as a video. Indeed, that creation also included voice. It also seems that Samsung is looking to go above and replicate that feature with a “more advanced” version.

It’s being also reported that Samsung’s alternative to Animoji will use the built-in facial detection hardware in both Galaxy S9 and S9+ to track the user’s face and cast the movement onto Samsung’s own 3D emoji character. As of how “more advanced” aspect of the future will entail is unknown.

While rumors suggest the next major version of Android will include support for smartphones with a so-called design, like somewhat of iPhone X. It appears that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will retain slim bezels along the top and bottom of the display for the front camera, microphone, and sensors.

Apart from that, Apple has already announced new Animoji characters coming with the release of iOS 11.3, with even more coming, along with FaceTime integration in iOS 12. Only time will tell what Samsung has in store for its user base when it is officially announced later this month.

3D emojis will be powered by the Galaxy S9’s facial recognition system, which is expected to remain less secure than Face ID on the iPhone X. Other biometric options will include a rear fingerprint reader and an iris scanner.

Samsung is rumored to release the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ on Friday, March 16, with pre-orders expected to begin about two weeks prior. Starting on February 25? Where we can see exactly what Samsung is going to call its own Animoji-esque functionality and what its defining feature, or unique selling point, will be over Apple’s offering.
