It’s now official, Xiaomi has released for download MIUI 9 beta, the much-anticipated new custom Android ROM for Redmi and Mi devices. Here are the details.
Newly announced MIUI 9 is based on Android 7.0 Nougat, and the first pre-release beta will be available on August 11. MIUI 9 boasts faster performance and smart new features, alongside other updates as well. Apart from Nougat features including split screen, the newer Xiaomi ROM version brings faster app launch times, a more dynamic resource allocation for a fluid experience, and other features and improvements.
Xiaomi has took the wraps off MIUI 9 at an event in Beijing, along with the unveil of Mi 5X smartphone. The MIUI 9 brings several improvements, optimizations and new features, such as smart assistant and universal search. According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, now there are 281 million active MIUI users globally in 55 languages and 142 countries.
MIUI 9’s Image Search
Image search, Smart assistant and Smart app launcher will be initially available only in China ROM. Some of the features might not be rolling out for all the devices. MIUI 9 closed beta will begin for MI 6 and Redmi Note 4X (Qualcomm) in China from July 27th.
Release date for the first China-exclusive improvement is Image Search, Xiaomi users will now be able to filter their photos by keywords, like in Google Photos. For example, using the search term “rat” in your photos should bring up all pictures related to your furry roommate. The second is Smart Assistant, Xiaomi’s rival to Google AI Assistant, Siri, and Alexa, but, as hinted already, we could be waiting a while to pit it against its competitors later.
MIUI 9 Phone: Compatibility
Note, this is the China Developer ROM, and currently no information about the Global ROM release date has provided as yet. The MIUI 9 will run out-of-the-box on the Xiaomi Mi 5X, and the MIUI 9 China build will be released for Xiaomi MI6 and Redmi Note 4X powered by Qualcomm chips.
While the second phase pf the MIUI 9 China Developer ROM roll out begins on August 25, with builds for the MI MIX, Mi Note 2, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5c, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Mi 4S, Mi 4c, Mi Note Pro and Redmi 4X.
Finally, in late September, the MIUI 9 China Developer ROM will be made available to all other Xiaomi and Redmi phones, as the company says, expected to see MIUI 9 installations on Mi 1/1S and Mi 2A. All compatible devices to get the MIUI 9 update eventually are listed here.
What’s new in MIUI 9: Features
The MIUI 9, which packs a bunch of new features and improvements including faster app load times, new design elements, shortcuts on lock screen split screen, smart functionality and much more.
While the MIUI 9 optimizes the system to boost performance and load apps faster than before. Highlights, the new Image feature search that has the ability to distinguish your images by typing in keywords.
MIUI 9 Smart Assistant
This feature will let you search for pretty much anything on your phone and swiping to right the Home screen will bring up the search along with app suggestions, news and other customizable widgets, similar to Apple’s Spotlight feature for iOS.
MIUI 9 Smart App Launcher
There’s a new Smart App launcher that will suggest apps to launch based on the content on the screen, Xiaomi says that some of the features mentioned here will only be available in China and that the Global ROM might be a little different.
The Smart App Launcher in MIUI 9 allows users to launch specific apps based on the current location of their screens. For example, if a friend sends you an SMS with a street address, you’ll be able to launch the navigation app straight from the messaging screen, saving valuable time.
The latest Xiaomi’s custom OS “MIUI 9” brings in three new themes, No Boundary, Colour Fabtasy, and Cool Black as well as a new default theme. Additionally, new features will include a new design on the lock screen, a new shortcut to activate the torch by swiping right on the lock screen. Whiler the split screen feature will be found on MIUI 9 as well.
After all, performance improvements are usually one of the main reasons for users to upgrade to MIUI 9. With impressed by the so-called Dynamic resource allocation either. This algorithm gives apps that are currently in use priority access to system resources, improving their performance and stability. Xiaomi MIUI 9 is faster, smarter and more refined.
