You can now download watchOS 4.2.3, tvOS 11.2.6 and macOS 10.13.3 Supplemental Update released for all compatible Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac hardware. Apple has officially made available of these updates in order to combat the Telugu Indian character bug which has been going around since last week.
As promised, Apple has released revisions of iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS with a fix for a bug that crashes devices running earlier operating system iterations when an Indian language character is received by certain messaging apps.
The latest updates to all issued today is a remedy for a nasty text rendering issue discovered last week. At the time, device users who received messages containing a particular Telugu character would experience iOS springboard and app troubles, including Apple’s own Messages and Safari. Third-party apps like Gmail, Outlook, WhatsApp and even Facebook Messenger were also impacted, as were Twitter clients. Once received, that character triggers apps to crash and remain unusable until the offending thread is deleted.
That Telugu character has been tweeted as part of an insipid prank on iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch owners. Other reports noted people were sending messages containing the text to their social friends to achieve similar ends.
Apple addressed the issue, saying that while beta versions of iOS 11.3 and macOS 10.13.4 resolve the problem, the company intended on issuing patches as soon as possible. And today it did with the release of iOS 11.2.6, watchOS 4.2.3, tcOS 11.2.6 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.3. In addition to critical text rendering bug, today’s update fixes a bug that caused certain third-party apps to fail to connect to external accessories.
It’s largely unlikely that most Apple Watch, Apple TV or Mac owners will have encountered the bug that these incremental updates fix. For a Dravidian language native to India – is sent or displayed on the device which has the CoreText bug.
The incremental updates to watchOS, tvOS and macOS now sit hand-in-hand with that release to ensure that the problem is fixed across all of Apple’s platforms with immediate effect. Once installed, those crashing issues should no longer be present when the Telugu character is received.
If you are an Apple Watch owner – either the original Apple Watch, Series 1, Series 2, or Series 3 – then you are able to grab the latest watchOS 4.2.3 update via the Watch app on the connected smartphone. Apple Watch should have at least 50% battery and should be connected to power in order to download the update, Mac owners, whether that be iMac or MacBook, can simply invoke the Mac App Store and grab the update right now from the Update section. As this will come down as an immediate over-the-air update. Apple TV owners can do same and grab the tvOS 11.2.6 update from software update section found in tvOS Settings.
