iOS 11 Beta 2 Brings Back 3D Touch App Switcher

Finally, in the the second iOS 11.1 beta Apple brings back 3D Touch App Switcher gesture to iOS 11 compatible devices which was removed with initial version of iOS 11.0.x. Here are the details.

Once again saying that Apple with the release of iOS 11.1 beta 2 has reintroduced the 3D Touch App Switcher gesture on those devices that are equipped with 3D Touch fingerprint sensor. This exact feature addition was “intentionally removed” during the iOS 11 beta testing period and was not reimplemented ahead of the official iOS 11 launch. But Apple engineering team head Craig Federighi promised it would be re-added in the future iOS 11 update.

iOS 11 3D Touch Multitasking Gesture Returns

Few weeks after that response, iOS 11.1 beta 2 released today has done just what the chief Software executive promised. It brings back the much-loved 3D Touch App Switcher gesture to all 3D Touch-capable devices. Craig did mention in that email that it was removed in iOS 11.0.x due to a “technical constrain,” likely caused by gesture-based interface of iPhone X.

To learn about it, first of all the gesture was been implemented in iOS 9, allowing users with a compatible iPhone to 3D Touch at the left edge of the display to bring up the App Switcher. When it was removed or pulled from the beta, many iPhone users were disappointed as it is a convenient action for switching between apps with a single gesture. Sans gesture, the only way to bring up the App Switcher on an iPhone is by a double press on the Home button.

It was very helpful when opening multitasking App Switcher with 3D Touch. Currently available to developers and will likely be available to public testers shortly. Here is where you can find it; Settings > General > Software Updates on the device for those with configuration profile installed for iOS betas. Or as an IPSW download from developer.apple.com for those who like going through updates via old fashioned iTunes way.

Note: We’re still early in the beta testing process, so it’s not yet clear when iOS 11.1 will see a public release.
