The latest report at least speaks on Apple will launch at least one new iPhone model with a triple-lens rear camera in 2019, according to Taiwanese website Economic Daily News, citing a research note from Deutsche Securities analyst Jialin Lu.
What’s even better than an iPhone with two cameras around the back? One with three cameras? At least one 2019 iPhone model of those released, will ship with three rear-facing camera lenses based on a research note. Lu believes that Apple will go down this route so that it can enable advanced 3D sensing via stereoscopic vision in the rear cameras on an iPhone, as well as better zoom capabilities.
This will mean that two of the cameras on 2019 iPhone model will be used to capture an image of the same object, at the same time, but from two different angles thanks to their different locations on the handset. A triangulation method would then be used to obtain the distance between the iPhone and the object.
About the fraction, Bloomberg had previously suggested that a future iPhone would include a feature relating to rear0-facing 3D sensing capabilities and this latest rumor would tie into that nicely.
Like the TrueDepth system on the iPhone X’s front, the report suggests that the rear 3D sensing will be used for augmented reality purposes. That’s because the future iPhones will be equipped with rear-facing 3D sensing capabilities. It’s also said that Apple was evaluating a time-of-flight approach that calculates the time it takes for a laser to bounce off surrounding objects to create a 3D image of the environment, but Lu believes that Apple will instead use the triple-lens approach for the rear camera system.
Such a camera system would allow Apple further push the technology into the world of AR with stereoscopic capabilities potentially helping developers leverage ARKit and giving us a new round of impressive apps following the initial influx following the arrival of iOS 11.
Finally, the third camera lens is likely to support 3x optical zoom bringing such a feature to the iPhone for the first time and improving upon the 2x optical zoom currently offered by the iPhone X Plus. If all of this is true it is likely that such a feature set would be reserved for Apple’s 2019 flagship lineup with three cameras potentially tricking down to other handsets over the coming weeks.
With this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) ready to begin in just a week away, most of the attention is being paid to what’s right around the corner. Yuanta Securities analyst Jeff Pu also expects Apple to release at least one iPhone with a triple-lens rear camera next year.
Note: Huawei’s new P20 Pro smartphone became the first with a triple-lens rear camera system, including a 14MP lens, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens, and an eight-megapixel telephoto lens with up to 3x optical zoom. This time around, Apple’s iPhone to get the similar treatment with triple camera lens integration.
