Xiaomi May Unveil Its Own Pinecone Processor On February 28

Xiaomi is already said to be working on its own Pinecone custom mobile SoC for the upcoming smartphone range. Reportedly, Xiaomi is all-set to announce its ‘Pinecone’ chipset this month, gets a release date. Here are the details.

The company’s first in-house processor may be the key to its survival in the long run, as it is planning to move away from Qualcomm processors. Now the company has scheduled a launch event on February 28 to only introduce the custom chip to the world.

Following the earlier reports, today Xiaomi confirmed on Weibo that it will be announcing its very own mobile chipset, named after its subsidiary “Pinecone.” in Beijing. Rumors also pointed at Mi 5c aka “Meri” as the first device to carry the chip. Multiple Geekbench results suggest that the phone is powered by an octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM and runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat (though, the leaked prototypes still show Android Marshmallow).

According to the Chinese semiconductor expert Laoyao, Pinecone Electronics was set up by Xiaomi with help from chip maker Leadcore back in 2014. Thus, the project has been under way for over two years and Xiaomi’s chipset plan isn’t exactly a secret anymore. What actually it means is that rather than fully relying on the likes of Snapdragon and MediaTek, Xiaomi can take complete advantage of Leadcore’s cellular radio technology for its own chipsets, nevertheless, keeping the cost down in the long term.

If this happens, Xiaomi will join other smartphone makers such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei. Xiaomi’s Pinecone processor could be the first one used inside the Xiaomi Mi6, expected to release next month. The SoC is said to be tied to Xiaomi that resulted from a $15 million technology buy out from Datang subsidiary Leadcore Technology Ltd. Once Xiaomi gets comfortable with its chip production, it can potentially integrate more features into its future-centric chipsets to stand out from the crowded mobile market. It’s still be a while before we see how good Pinecone really is.

The Xiaomi’s custom Pinecone SoC announcement is set for next Tuesday – begins at Beijing National Convention Center and starts at 2PM Chine Time(11:30 AM IST). Stay tuned for more information on the first Xiaomi processor.

Update X1: This article has been updated to pinpoint the fact that Leadcore doesn’t actually own any share in Pinecone.
