Xiaomi Mi 8 has officially been announced as its new flagship smartphone, and the first handset to introduce with an iPhone X-style notch at the top of the display. Here are the details we and you need to know about it.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is official, while the phone is celebrating the 8th anniversary of the Chinese company. It comes with premium specifications and features. The Mi 8 has a 6.21-inch OLED screen from Samsung, wrapping around a fairly large notch that houses a 20-megapixel selfie camera.
Specifications And Features
In terms of design, the Mi 8 phone has a four-way curved glass back panel and an aluminum frame. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor inside. And there is new 12-megapixel dual camera setup apparently scores 105 on DxOMark. Xiaomi also says that this is the first phone ever to use dual-frequency GPS, which is supposed to give more accurate location data.
The dual-SIM Mi 8 smartphone runs MIUI 10 software, and the display is of fullHD+ Samsung AMOLED accompanied with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio, supports Always-on display. It also comes with 6GB/8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, with 8GB RAM exclusive to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.
As for storage, the Mi 8 phone gets 64GB/ 128GB/ 256GB of inbuilt storage. Connectivity options include G VoLTE, Wi-Fi (dual-band, 2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, dual-band GPS (with L1/ L5 signal support, USB Type-C port. It bears a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
Interestingly, Xiaomi also unveiled its take on Apple’s Animoji 3D avatars, calling them Mi Meng, which can capture up to 52 facial muscle movements, and will not only imitate your expressions but also your voice.
The Explorer Edition has an in-display fingerprint sensor that, for the first time in a phone, uses pressure sensitivity. The company also claims that Explorer Edition is the first Android phone in the world to use 3D face recognition technology, like the iPhone X’s Face ID – and definitely, there’s an Animoji equivalent on board.
The final entry in the Mi 8 lineup is the Mi 8 SE, a smaller, slower, and cheaper variant of the Mi 8 clearly takes naming cues from Apple’s own fun-sized model. It’s the first phone to use Qualcomm’s brand new midrange SD710 CPU and has a 5.88-inch OLED screen, that could give the Mi 8 SE a strong position in the Chinese market.
The Mi 8 SE includes an AI dual camera with one 12-megapixel sensor and another 5-megapixel sensor as well. The 10nm octa-core chip includes two Kryo 360 Cortex-A75 cores that are clocked at 2.2GHz and six Kryo 360 Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.7GHz.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Price and Release Date
The Mi 8 price has been stated at CNY 2,699 (~$421) in China, with the Explorer Edition starting from 3,699 yuan ($577) and the SE available for 1,799 yuan ($281). These prices are extremely competitive for extremely powerful smartphones from Xiaomi.
The Mi 8 will be available in China from the 5th of June, with the SE variant following on 8th and the Explorer Edition coming at a later date. No word on pricing and availability for India or any other markets just yet. Stay tuned for more updates!
