Xiaomi Announces Pinecone Surge S1: Company’s First Chipset

Xiaomi has today made its first-gen ‘Pinecone’ mobile SoC, the Pinecone Surge S1 official. Finally, as promised, Xiaomi introduced their long-rumored mobile processor, which has been testing this chipset quite a bit lately, though. The Pinecone Surge S1 is now official, along with the Xiaomi Mi 5c which we’ll talk about in our separate post. Here are the details.


The first-generation Pinecone chipset by Xiaomi is announced, and the Surge S1 is a 64-bit octa-core CPU, aimed at four Cortex-A53 cores here clocked at 2.2GHz, and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz, alternatively, it seems like Xiaomi has opted to utilize a big.LITTLE SC design. For those wondering this chip has been built using a 28nm HPC+ manufacturing process, and ARM’s Mali-T860 MP4 GPU there to take care of graphics processing.

This new Pinecone Surge S1 processor offers support for Cat.4 LTE, dual channel LPDDR3 933MHz, and also offers the latest Vulkan standard. In addition to that, the processor offer 32-bit DSP support, while also offering supports for Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) and 16kHz sampling. 14-bit dual ISP offers increased light sensitivity up to 150% and also a dual noise reduction algorithm here – supposed to reduce noise and presser image detail.


All of the aforementioned is supposed to result in great high-quality images, even if the lightning is not exactly ideal. Xiaomi has also included their own layer of security on top of this chip, which is apparently, upgradable. So that you will, essentially, be able to receive OTA (over-the-air) updates for this processor.

As part of that added layer of security on top of the Pinecone Surge S1, this chipset comes with mechanisms that are supposed top prevent data leakage. The best part is that, the Pinecone Surge S1 also supports smartphone display resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels.

Claims that Xiaomi speaks of this chip managed to outperform the 14nm Snapdragon 625 and both MediaTek Helio P10 as well as P20 in Geekbench 4.0 CPU multi-core benchmark, which the Chinese company sees as a chip in Pinecone Surge S1’s shooting range. All in all, the Xiaomi’s first Pinecone Surge S1 processor is a mid-range SoC, and is not expected to compete with some high-end offerings out there, and it’s said, Xiaomi will use it for their budget-friendly and mid-range smartphones, such as Xiaomi Mi 5c – also introduced today.
